In his role, he was responsible for defining the possibilities of digital for the institution and helping create student experiences that prepare them for the jobs of tomorrow.

Driven by an unwavering passion for the humane use and design of technology, Jim has dedicated three decades to anticipating, adapting to, and advancing technology trends and challenges. His entrepreneurial spirit is evident in his co-founding of Thin Air Labs and his leadership in the development of Rainforest Alberta.

Jim’s influence extends to several local not-for-profit, technology and life sciences companies, where he provides strategic and governance leadership. He is the founder and board member of BioHubx in Calgary, an early member of The A100, a board director for the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, private health technology company Mikata Health, and CRIN (Clean Resources Innovation Network), and is also an entrepreneur mentor with Venture Mentoring Services of Alberta.

Outlined in his 2017 thought-provoking book, Tip of the Spear: Our Species and Technology at a Crossroads, Gibson examines the challenges and the opportunities ahead:

“The real work ahead is in understanding that our future is governed both by the innovation of ‘things’ as well as innovation of ‘ways.’” This way forward will be about magical and wonderous new advances and recognizing that progress must be for the many, not just the few.

Jim lives in Calgary and is working on his second book with Laura Haynes called, “The Human Race: Axioms of Ways and a New Way Forward,” which is due for publication in the summer of 2025.
